    Abstract

The volume V, issue 1 of JCRS took a long time to publish due to some technical issues with our new website. Multiple articles were received from various sections of academia in India and abroad. Yet, after blind peer review, many of them had to be rejected. Also, as per our policy of plagiarism, many articles had to be rejected for reports of AI and similarities generated by iThenticate. This issue includes articles from diverse domains like history, folk beliefs, traditions, painting, religion, and spiritualism. This issue, like our earlier issues, will surely encourage and interest future research and exploration of culture and education.

    Abstract

During British colonial rule, painting played an important role as a global medium of communication. With the spread of works by renowned artists worldwide, a new dimension was added to painting in the Indian subcontinent. Traditional classical and realistic painting styles developed, which later gained international recognition. In this context, the renowned painter of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mohammad Sultan (S M Sultan), held a special position. In his paintings, he depicted the beauty of rural life, the hard work of farmers, and the reality of the rural economy. His work deeply reflects the history, tradition, and struggles of the people of Bengal. Sultan believed that farmers were the center of world civilization and that civilization truly develops through their labor. Sultan's notable paintings, such as 'Masdhara-2' (Fishing-2) and 'Dhan-Marai-3' (Thresh Paddy-3), are famous for their dramatic presentation. Through these paintings, he depicted the vitality of rural life in Bengal and the contemporary social system of Bengal. The unique presentation and deep thoughtfulness of his artwork have brought Bengali culture to the international arena. As part of this research, Sultan's notable paintings, works preserved in museums and art galleries, and documentary materials published in various media have been analyzed. Through this, the drama, content, and socio-cultural connections of his art have been highlighted. This research is not just an evaluation of Sultan's artwork, but rather an attempt to explore the deeper dimensions of Bengali cultural identity.

  • Decolonizing Knowledge: Tribal Epistemology and Ontological Pluralism in India

    Abstract

This article explores how colonial and postcolonial regimes of knowledge production in India have methodically invalidated the epistemological traditions that tribal communities hold. What has been forfeited here is not a tidy set of utilitarian information, but an entire architecture of knowing, for example: the scaffolding behind how people make sense of the world. If we incorporate Santos’s concept of epistemicide, Mignolo’s coloniality of knowledge, Quijano’s coloniality of power, and Smith’s decolonizing methodologies, together, it becomes possible to place the Indian situation within broader-global debates on decoloniality, while also insisting on its own historical specificity. Central to the article, there is a sustained engagement with the work of Bodhi S. R., whose theorization of tribal knowledge as ability-based, practice-centred, and relationally embedded, and whose conceptual triad of epistemological stability, distortion, and disintegration, offers a more analytically precise vocabulary for theorizing tribal epistemologies than the anthropological frameworks, historically dominated the field. The article discusses the contours of tribal epistemic life through cosmovision, oral tradition, sacred ecology, thereby demonstrating how these dimensions simultaneously constitute ways of knowing. Structural threats, displacement, assimilationist education, biopiracy, and digital-cultural penetration are shown to continue the epistemicidal project through ostensibly developmental means. The article concludes by arguing that the recognition of tribal epistemologies is not a matter of cultural accommodation, rather it should be viewed as cognitive justice - a prerequisite for the pluriversal reorganization of knowledge.

    Abstract

  • Sushil Kumar Dhara in the Civil Disobedience Movement

    Abstract

On 12 March 1930, Gandhiji set out on his historic march to challenge the Salt Law, and on 6 April, he formally violated it by producing salt. This act inspired a nationwide movement, as people across India began manufacturing salt in open defiance of colonial regulations. In the Midnapore district, significant efforts to break the Salt Laws were organised at the Narghat Salt Centre in the Tamluk subdivision and the Pichaboni Salt Centre in the Contai subdivision. However, the violation of the Salt Act at the Nortghat Salt Centre notably reflected the astute leadership and strategic thinking of Sushil Kumar Dhara, a Prominent Congress activist from the Mahishadal Police Station area of the Tamluk Sub-division. Consequently, numerous volunteers from outside the district, including 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Dhaka, Chittagong, Faridpur, Barisal, and Mymensingh, joined this salt centre. It was through their collective efforts that the Norghat Salt Centre emerged as the 'Dandi of the Tamluk Sub-division'. During this period, despite the arrest of leaders and widespread police brutality, the movement to defy the Salt Laws did not come to a halt. On the other hand, the entire district of Midnapore, including Tamluk, began to join the Civil Disobedience Movement. Notably, after arresting Sushil Kumar Dhara, the British government initially detained him in the Tamluk Sub-Jail and subsequently in the Midnapore Central Jail. Afterwards, he was taken to Rajshahi Central Jail. Yet, despite this, it was not possible to suppress Sushil Kumar Dhara. He was not merely a political prisoner while in jail. During this period, various facets of his humanitarian service came to the fore. Along with that, he also received an erudite education. All these lessons proved particularly useful during the Quit India Movement of 1942. He even became the Sarbadhinayak (Commander-in-Chief) of the National Army of the Tamralipta Jatiya Sarkar. Notably, during the Civil Disobedience Movement, leaders from the Tamluk and Contai Sub-divisions, including Sushil Kumar Dhara, remained unwavering in their commitment to the ideals of non-violent Satyagraha. Nevertheless, the British government continued to carry out repressive measures during this period, including the imprisonment of countless men and women, the confiscation of their property and the imposition of fines on a Wholesale scale. Notably, even after employing every conceivable weapon of severe repression and torture, the British government failed to subdue the residents of Tamluk and indeed of Midnapore. Ultimately, in May 1934, the Congress Working Committee unconditionally withdrew the Civil Disobedience Movement. On the other hand, a firm resolve to carry on the movement against the mighty British government became deeply ingrained in every fibre of Sushil Kuamr Dhara. This is reflected in the Quit India Movement and in the conduct of the Tamralipta National Government's national army. For this reason, based on local information, a comprehensive discussion and portrayal of Sushil Kuma Dhara is essential. The paper highlights the role of Sushil Kumar Dhara in the civil disobedience movement and the salt satyagraha, which was successful only in the Tamluk region of Midnapore.
